Featured Presentation

How “quirky” is your update?

Speaker: Martin Schoombee, Senior Lead Developer Catapult Systems

Summary: Running totals are a lot easier with the SQL Server 2012 (and later) T-SQL syntax, but making it perform over large data sets still remain a challenge. This demo-heavy session will explore the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to calculating running totals. Our main focus however, will be a method coined by Jeff Moden as the "quirky update". This method produces lightning-fast results when calculating running totals...sometimes the only option if you're dealing with large volumes and high performance requirements.

About Martin: Microsoft-based Business Intelligence solutions have been my passion and focus for the past 10+ years. Although I prefer (and have used) Kimball methodologies and design principles in the majority of my projects, finding the best solution is always my first priority. Thinking outside of the proverbial box is something I am used to while seeking feasible solutions to complex scenarios. I have been responsible for building numerous data warehouses/marts from the ground up, and very comfortable leading all stages of the development lifecycle of BI projects...including the architecture, delivery and management thereof. I consider my expertise to be in the areas of dimensional modeling, ETL development (and automation) and optimization of BI processes. In addition to my Business Intelligence skills I also have some experience in web development (ASP; ASP.NET; HTML; COM+; VB Script) as well as limited exposure to Business Objects and Cognos.
